It’s the Season of Giving Thanks

Together we can fight isolation and loneliness with love and belonging for vulnerable NYC seniors during the holidays and every day. Heartfelt thanks for being a partner in supporting the Carter Burden Network’s mission.

The largest issue confronting aging we hear time and again from seniors is the sense of loneliness and isolation they face.

That’s why this holiday season it’s especially poignant that some disturbing truths are shared that our aging neighbors endure according to recent research from the NYC Department for the Aging:

  • Depression: Studies have shown that up to 20% of older adults experience major depression and that depression is higher among older adults compared to the general population.

  • Suicide rates: The suicide rate in the older adult (65+) population is 50% higher than the general population in the U.S.

  • Risk of social isolation: Due to the death of loved ones, decreased mobility, and onset of chronic health conditions, seniors are at increased risk of becoming socially isolated, which carries an escalated risk of developing depression and thoughts of suicide.

The solution to all of this is belonging—with your support, we can continue to foster a welcoming environment that provides opportunities to form connections that enrich the lives of older adults.

As the senior population continues to grow, so too will the demand for our services. A donation to the Carter Burden Network will help us strengthen our core pillars of our work—senior centers, social services, health and wellness, arts and culture, and volunteering—all of which enhance the daily quality of lives in vulnerable older New Yorkers.

“When I first came to the Covello Center, I wasn’t active, didn’t exercise, was depressed and lonely. Covello has helped me to be more active, more outspoken, and more energetic through exercise programs, awareness, walking classes, and better eating habits. Now I’m a totally new person—more healthy, more active, and more aware.”
— Felicita, Covello Member and Active Zumba Participant

Thank you in advance for making a commitment to fight isolation and loneliness among older adults this holiday season.
We couldn’t do it without you.
