Open Call: Making Art Work Artist-in-Residence 2026 - 2027

Making Art Work invites visual artists age 60+ living in NYC to apply for our Artist-in-Residence program. Selected artists will receive a three-month studio residency at the Making Art Work Studio at Covello Older Adult Center in East Harlem, with the opportunity to engage the community and present a solo exhibition at the AIR Gallery.

Eligibility

  • Visual artists age 60 or older Current residents of New York City

  • Must have an active studio practice

  • Must NOT currently have access to a studio Past residents of the MAW AIR program are not eligible to apply.

Residency Details

  • Length: 3 months (Winter: Jan–Mar, Spring: Apr–Jun, Summer: Jul–Sep, Fall: Oct–Dec)

  • Location: MAW Artist in Residency Studio, Leonard Covello Center 312 East 109th Street, New York, NY 10029 Studio hours: 10:00 am–4:00 pm, Monday–Sunday

  • Time commitment: Minimum of 20 hours per week in the studio

  • Community engagement: Each artist must contribute through at least one of the following — teaching engagement, workshop(s), community project, open studio hours, and/or an artist talk. Please outline your proposal in your application.

  • Restrictions: Hazardous, flammable, or fume-producing materials are not permitted

  • Exhibition: Upon completion of the residency, artists will present work created during their session in a solo exhibition in the AIR Gallery, accompanied by a public opening reception

  • Funding: This is an unfunded residency. No stipend or materials budget is provided.

5.15 high-resolution images of artwork from the last 3 years, labeled with title, medium, and year created

6.Current CV

7.Residency timeline preference: Rank Winter, Spring, Summer, and Fall 2025 in order of preference. (Winter: Jan–Mar, Spring: Apr–Jun, Summer: Jul–Sep, Fall: Oct–Dec)
