Reauthorization of the Older Americans Act (OAA)

“The U.S. House of Representatives passed the reauthorization of the Older Americans Act (OAA) including the key provisions of the bipartisan Younger-Onset Alzheimer's Disease Act. The Alzheimer's Association and the Alzheimer's Impact Movement (AIM) have worked with Congressional champions on both sides of the aisle on this important legislation prior to and since its introduction just days before more than 1,200 advocates gathered in Washington for the AIM Advocacy Forum.

This bill would allow individuals living with dementia under the age of 60 to access supports and services from programs under the OAA. Those programs include nutritional services, supportive services and respite care through the National Family Caregiver Support program. These are services and supports that can improve quality of life for people living with dementia and their caregivers.

Thanks to the steadfast work of our advocates, the Younger-Onset Alzheimer's Disease Act (H.R. 1903/S. 901) has tremendous bipartisan support, with more than 200 cosponsors in the House and 36 Senate cosponsors. Today's action by the House is an important next step. In the coming weeks we will continue our relentless work, encouraging the Senate to follow suit and pass the OAA with the Younger-Onset Alzheimer's Disease Act and its key provisions included.

You can read our joint statement from the Association and AIM about today's action here.

In addition, we anticipate another of our policy priorities, the Palliative Care and Hospice Education and Training Act (PCHETA) will receive a vote later today in the House. Stay tuned for an update on that critical legislation later today. “
