After 36 years as Executive Director of the Carter Burden Network, Bill Dionne has retired. He leaves behind a legacy in the thousands of older adults whose lives he touched, one lunch table at a time.
We asked members from our newly minted Bill Dionne Luncheon Club what Bill meant to them. Here's what they told us.
A husband and wife who are longtime members shared their appreciation. “He's the heart and soul of this place,” he said, “and he established something really wonderful, and I thank him for it, we thank him for it.” His wife agreed, wishing Bill well in whatever comes next, “whatever you do, you're going to do properly, because that's the only way you know it.”
And for many members, it simply came down to how Bill made them feel every single day. “When I first met Bill, he was always smiling,” one member remembered. “It's just that he's a good person and he's very caring. You can see it in his face that he's a good guy.” He recalled how he always made sure members had good, “nutritious food,” before adding simply, “I'm going to miss him.”
Bill's presence was felt in the smallest, most personal moments. It was the way he made people feel truly seen. “When Bill talks to people, he looks right in their eye and really makes them feel like he's talking to them,” said Linda. As she put it, “he's a very important person in the center. He will be truly missed.”
Bill Dionne led the Carter Burden Network for 36 years, growing it into a second home for older adults across New York City, and offering not just meals, but art and music programs, fitness classes, health workshops, field trips, and the kind of community that makes people feel seen.
Bill's mother used to ask him a simple question every day:
“Did you make someone else's life a little better today?”
For 36 years, the answer was yes - every single day. That question became the quiet engine behind everything Bill built at Carter Burden Network: a place where older adults are never invisible, never isolated, and always belong. The Luncheon Club has been officially renamed the Bill Dionne Luncheon Club to keep his legacy alive for generations to come.
