Mayor Mamdani Cools Off at Our Covello Older Adult Center

When the Mayor Rolled Up His Sleeves

New York City was in the grip of a dangerous heatwave when Mayor Zohran Mamdani and NYC Department for the Aging Commissioner Dr. Lisa Scott-McKenzie walked through the doors of our Leonard Covello Older Adult Center. For our members, that visit landed at exactly the right moment.

Extreme heat is one of the most serious, and most underestimated, health risks older adults face. As we age, our bodies become less able to regulate temperature, and common conditions like heart disease, diabetes, and certain medications can make heat exhaustion and heatstroke set in faster and with less warning. Dizziness, confusion, rapid heartbeat, and nausea can escalate quickly, which is exactly why CBN opens every one of our centers as a cooling center the moment temperatures spike.

During this heatwave alone, CBN served approximately 600 older adults across our cooling centers, offering a safe, air-conditioned place to be when staying home could have been dangerous. Behind the scenes, our Case Management team completed almost 300 wellness calls to homebound clients and their families checking in, offering guidance, and making sure no one was riding out the heat alone.

It was against that backdrop that the Mayor didn't just stop by for a photo. He rolled up his sleeves, helped prepare and serve refreshing drinks to our members himself, and spent the morning in conversation, sharing heat-safety tips alongside our staff. It was a small gesture with real meaning: a reminder that the people responsible for this city's wellbeing were willing to stand in a warm room and pour a cold drink, the same way our staff does every single day, heatwave or not.
