Above and Beyond: Neel and Peter

About a year and a half ago, Neel signed up for our Friendly Visiting Program and was connected with Peter, a man in his late 60s who lives in Harlem. Neel didn't know much going in, just that Peter had birds, some trouble walking and talking, and could use a regular visitor. One day, Neel showed up and rang the doorbell. He's been going back nearly every week since.

Peter welcomes Neel the same way every time, calling him familia and treating him like the definition of the word. There's no phone call or text to set it up; Neel just shows up, and Peter opens the door. They watch Judge Judy, talk about the neighborhood, and catch up on each other's lives, from Peter's mother to Neel's kids, the small stuff and the hard stuff both.

Over time, the visits became a fixture for both of them. Peter keeps a calendar by the door, and when Neel leaves, Peter hands him a pen so he can write down the next visit. The program helped get Peter a new walker, which he now calls "my Mercedes" and breaks out for special occasions, like picking up his meds, or the day Neel and Peter went to a Mets game together, Peter's first ever.

Neel describes it as a two-way street. Peter listens without judgment and has a way of making hard days feel lighter; when Neel lost his father, Peter kept asking how he was doing. In turn, Neel has shown up for the small stuff too, like the week Peter's television, his lifeline, stopped working, and Neel came by to fix it. "It was like the best moment ever," Neel says of the moment the screen came back on. Peter still talks about it.

Neel says the program asks very little of him, which is part of what makes it work: show up, sit down, let the conversation go wherever it goes. But what he's gotten back is much bigger than that: a standing weekly routine, a sense of purpose, and a friendship with a man who Neel now considers family. "We could be brothers on some planet," he says.

Friendships like Neel and Peter's don't happen without someone willing to ring the doorbell in the first place. Our Friendly Visiting Program matches volunteers with older adults across Manhattan who would welcome a regular visitor. No special skills required, just consistency and an open ear.
