Our Members Take the Runway at "Beauty at Any Age" Fashion Show

On May 20th, the Covello Center transformed into a runway for “Beauty at Any Age,” a fashion show unlike any other; every single look was designed, sewn, and modeled by our own members through Covello's Making Art Work sewing program, led by instructor Shelli Scott.

Eighteen designer-models took their turn on the runway, and no two stories were alike. Wen showed a hand-painted cotton button-down created through pure stream-of-consciousness inspiration. Charmin walked in an elegant green dashiki dress adorned with turtles, a nod to wisdom and longevity, inspired by the Black Power and Black Is Beautiful movements. Feng modeled a traditional Chinese silk jacket and dress as a celebration of her heritage, while Ann, one of the program's instructors, debuted a layered coat-and-pants set inspired by Chinese Imperial robes, samurai armor, and European design complete with ceramic buttons and jewelry she made in Covello's own studio.

Resourcefulness took center stage too. Devi turned repurposed leftover fabric into a sharp pinstripe suit. Norma transformed an old curtain into a pastel pleated skirt and asymmetrical crop top. And in the most jaw-dropping demonstration of creativity, Felicita’s dress was made entirely from plastic bags. Proof that imagination, not materials, is what makes a garment beautiful.

The afternoon closed with a group finale, all eighteen designers returning to the runway together for one last walk and a well-earned bow, before guests joined the models for a reception to celebrate the artistry, culture, and confidence on full display.

NYC Department for the Aging Commissioner Dr. Lisa Scott-McKenzie was on hand to cheer the models on and walk the runway herself.

“Beauty at Any Age” isn't just a theme, it's something our members prove true every time they pick up a needle and thread.
